On the eastern shore of the Mediterranean sits the sweetest of the countries I have visited so far. I traveled to Lebanon in November 2022, two years after the disastrous Beirut explosion that devastated entire neighborhoods and left deep psychological scars. Today, Lebanon is living through one of the worst economic crises in the world: the local currency has lost over 90% of its value, basic goods are unaffordable for many and electricity is unreliable. Still, the country keeps going as it always does. Culturally, Lebanon is a mosaic of muslim, christian and druze communities due to all empires that have ruled here in the past — Phoenicians, Romans, Ottomans — and is still shaped today in language and culture by the more recent french colonial period, from which the country gained independence in 1943. In such a complex political and social context this photo series wants to be a simple travel diary that celebrates the beauty of Lebanon´s daily life: its Phoenician ruins, the small fishing ports, some of the most ancient cities in the world (Byblos), the massive Roman temples of Baalbek. Tripoli´s sweets. Beirut´s coffee. The Mediterranean sea.
